Quartz FAQ’s

What is a quartz worktop made up of?

Quartz worktops comprise around 93% crushed quartz, an abundant natural mineral found in earth’s surface, the remaining 7% on the manufactured worktop being the coloured resin binder.

Do you offer a template and installation service for quartz worktops?

Yes we do. We cover the whole of mainland England, Scotland and Wales.

Can you make and deliver a quartz worktop supply only?

Yes we can, providing the worktop is simple and can be lifted by our 2 man delivery team.

What is the longest length quartz worktop you can make?

Generally around 3000mm, however, some quartz brands, such as Silestone by Cosentino, make jumbo slabs in certain colours, allowing up to 3200mm worktop length

How are quartz worktop joints finished?

Quartz worktop joints are finished with a small bevel on the top edges, the joint is filled with silicone to prevent water penetration.

Can I have splashbacks and upstands in the same colour quartz as the worktops?

Yes you can.

I have an island, what is the largest quartz worktop you can install?

Generally, 3000mm x 1350mm, however some quartz brands, such as Silestone by Cosentino, make jumbo slabs in certain colours, allowing us to make a worktop for you up to 3200mm x 1550mm in one piece.

Can I place hot pans and hot cookware directly onto my quartz worktop?

No, the extreme heat can cause permanent marking and damage due to the resin heating up. Use a pan stand/pan bars/trivet at all times.

Do quartz worktops scratch or stain?

No, not if looked after and used correctly. Quartz worktops are non-porous, therefore liquid will sit directly on the surface without penetrating into the material. Do not, however, leave acidic liquids on the surface, wipe away immediately, as these may cause tarnishing of the polished surface. Always use chopping boards for food cutting and preparation

Can I have an unsupported breakfast bar overhang on my quartz worktop?

Yes you can, generally up to 200mm with 20mm thick quartz worktops and up to 300mm with 30mm thick worktops.

How do I clean my quartz worktops?

We recommend Apollo Stone Guard as a daily spray on cleaner. This can be purchased on our website. We recommend using paper towel to apply the Stone Guard, wiping away the surface dirt, then buff dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Do not use bleach-based products on quartz worktops. For limescale, try a small inconspicuous test area with a mild supermarket limescale cleaner. Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners /creams/powders on polished finish quartz worktops. We recommend using Apollo Matt Stone Paste in addition to Apollo Stone Guard for removal of stubborn marks on concrete/matt finish quartz worktops. Always try an inconspicuous test area first.

Will my quartz worktops appear uniform in colour and appearance?

Whilst quartz worktops are made in batches and each set of kitchen worktops will be made from the same batch, minor imperfections in colour and appearance can sometimes be evident. This is due to the natural mineral quartz composition of the material. This is no way affects the durability or safe use of the product for the intended purpose. Colour swatches on this website and any samples sent to you are to be considered as a representative guide only, not an exact replica of what will be delivered.

Corian FAQ's

What is Corian?

Corian® Solid Surface is a solid, nonporous, homogeneous surfacing material, composed of ~1/3 acrylic resin (also known as polymethyl methacrylate or PMMA), and ~2/3 natural minerals.

Do you template and install Corian?

Yes we do. Our service coverage is mainland England, Scotland and Wales.

How thick is a Corian worktop?

Corian sheet is generally 12mm thick, bonded on a water resistant MDF ladder frame. The most popular Corian worktop thickness is 38mm overall, however it can be a made to a minimum of 25mm or over 38mm.

Can I install my Corian worktops if you just supply?

We do not recommend this, as all our installers are Dupont Corian trained and approved. We can make and deliver simple uncomplicated Corian worktops for you to fit, though not worktops with bonded joints, as this is a specialist process.

Is Corian waterproof?

Corian is non-porous and therefore hygienic and waterproof.

Where can I use Corian as a surface?

Corian can be used for many applications, though most frequently it is used in commercial environments and domestic kitchens and bathrooms.

Can I have upstands and splashbacks in the same Corian material as the worktops?

Yes you can, generally these will be 12mm thick.

I like the coved moulded factory fitted upstands/ splashbacks, is there anything I should be aware of when requesting these?

Yes, your walls must be generally clean, straight and plumb upright for coved upstands to work well in your room.

I have read that Corian joints are seamless and inconspicuous. What does this mean?

Corian joints are bonded on site with colour matched joint adhesive. The adhesive is applied in the join, and the worktops are clamped together. Once the adhesive has cured, the clamps are released and the joint is sanded and buffed to a smooth finish, to match the surrounding surface. Seamless means you should not be able to feel the join. Inconspicuous means you should not be able to see the joint clearly from 1 metre away. Corian colours with a veined appearance will highlight the joint more ,due to the change of direction of the veining.

What are the main differences between Corian and Quartz worktops?

Corian is an acrylic based material, whereas quartz is a stone-based material. Corian picks up the ambient temperature of the room and can feel warm to the touch, whereas quartz will always feel cold to the touch. Corian joints are seamless and inconspicuous, creating a flowing work surface, quartz joints are more noticeable. Corian is ideal for long worktop runs or large islands, where a quartz slab would not be available large enough to cover the island as one piece. Corian is generally repairable if damaged, quartz not so repairable other than maybe a small chip repair on an edge. Corian can be heated up and shaped, quartz cannot.

Can I place hot pans and cookware directly onto my Corian worktops?

No, the extreme heat can cause permanent marking and damage due to the acrylic heating up. Use a pan stand/pan bars/trivet at all times.

Does Corian stain?

The simple answer is no, it does not. The material is non porous, therefore any marks will be sitting on the surface of the worktop, not ingrained into the material. This makes for a very hygienic work surface.

How do I clean Corian?

Use Apollo Stone Guard, available to order on our website, as your routine daily cleaner. Wipe on with clean paper towel, removing the grease and grime, then buff dry with a soft microfibre cloth. For more stubborn marks, use Apollo Cream Clean, a mild abrasive cleaner, also available to purchase on our website.

How do I remove a scratch mark from my Corian surface?

For removal of accidental scratch marks, firstly try the Apollo Cream Clean. Apply in a circular motion with a white non scratch scrubbing pad or disc. You can buy Apollo Cream Clean on our website, we include a free scrubbing sponge. For more stubborn scratches, purchase our solid surface worktop care kit and follow the instructions provided.

What warranty do I get with my Corian worktops

All Corian worktops come with DuPont 10-Year Limited Installed Warranty Program providing the worktops are fabricated and installed by a Dupont Network Approved company.

Worktop template FAQ's

What is a worktop template?

A worktop template is a digital copy of the actual worktops you require to fit precisely into the space allocated.

Why do you need to visit to take a template?

We need to visit to take digital room measurements as the worktops are cut and fabricated off site. Our installers return with fully finished worktops, which should simply require placing and fixing into position.

Why do you not cut the worktops on site instead of templating?

Fabrication of specialist worktops requires hugely expensive and complicated industrial size computer aided machinery, therefore on-site cutting and fabrication / polishing is not possible, other than very small tasks.

How long does the template take?

Depending on the complexity of the project, templates can take anywhere between 1 hour and 5 hours.

Will I need to be present for the template visit?

Yes, we ask that you, or an appointed representative, are on site for the duration of the template. This is to ensure we can agree the complete and final specification prior to manufacture.

Can I change anything during or after the template visit?

You cannot change the material, colour or finish at any time after you have placed your order. If you do so, you may be required to pay cancellation costs passed on to us by our suppliers. You may change small specification details during the template with the agreement of the Surveyor. You may not make any changes after the template visit

How long will it be before you come back to install the worktops?

Around 7-10 working days generally. You will be advised of the installation date in advance.

Do you leave temporary worktops whilst you are away making my new worktops?

No, you will need to organise this if required.

Can you template on a Saturday or Sunday as I work during the week?

No, we only template Monday to Friday. If you are unable to attend, you may brief a representative to attend on your behalf.

Worktop installation FAQ's

How long will the installation take?

This depends on the complexity of the project, but generally between 1 hour and 5 hours.

Do your installers lift the large and heavy worktops on their own?

This depends on the supplier we use for your project. We will discuss this with you before you place your order if applicable to your project.

Do your installers require a parking permit?

If applicable to your location, then yes please. Allow for a long wheelbase transit or sprinter type van (at least two standard car lengths) for around five hours.

Do you charge extra to come into the London congestion charge zone?

Yes we do, though only at our cost price.

Does the worktop installation create dust?

All our installation teams take the greatest care not to create too much dust whilst fitting your worktops. Where necessary, dust extraction units will be used, for example when sanding solid surface joints. Regardless of this, there will be some dust that escapes from the work area and can be airborne for around 24 hours. We recommend you cover all sensitive areas with dust sheets prior to our arrival.

Does your team clean the worktops after installation and take their waste away?

Yes they do. This all forms part of the sign off procedure.

Can my plumber work on the sink and tap immediately after the installation?

We recommend all undermounted sinks are left for 24 hours before plumbing in, to allow any adhesive to cure. Overmounted sinks, taps and hobs can be fitted by your plumber and electrician straight away.

Do you test fit the sinks, taps and hobs etc to make sure they are a good fit in the apertures?

Yes we do, though we do not fix or connect.

Will I get chance to inspect the completed worktop installation?

Yes, you must do this with our installers before they leave your property. Any issues found must be recorded on their sign off forms and you must contact us straight away.

What should I check for during the final inspection?

We would request that you take your time to inspect the completed worktops both visually and by touch. Please take particular care to look and feel for chips, dents and scratches, as any claims for damage after the installers have left your property are difficult to prove. Whilst we do understand you are unlikely to be professional QA inspectors, we would expect you to make us and the installer aware of anything you feel may fall outside of acceptable tolerances.
